Our history
Merkley milestones
Open for business
Merkley brothers Alexander, Duncan, and William opened shop in Casselman in 1900, supplying sawn lumber, ancillary materials, and bricks to projects in rural Ontario and western Quebec.
Building Ottawa, brick by brick
Between 1922 and 1924, we supplied masonry materials for Ottawa landmarks like Glebe Collegiate and the Civic Hospital. Our iconic “Rideau red” bricks also shaped homes and businesses in up-and-coming Ottawa neighbourhoods, including Centretown, Hintonburg, and Sandy Hill.
A new generation
In 1958, Alexander’s son, Douglas Cameron, took over the family business — and moved the brickyard to the edge of Lebreton Flats. Here, we distributed masonry, stone, tools, adhesives, mortar, and cement to projects around the entire city. (From Nepean to Gloucester!)
A lifetime of achievement
Robert Merkley took the helm of Merkley Supply in 1982. He’s the heart behind our MSL Trade Show and helped raise $1.5M for Ottawa Hospital. In 2024, Robert was honoured with a Best Ottawa Business Lifetime Achievement Award for his community and business contributions.
