New this year: Educational Seminars
We recently sent out invitations to MSL 2011, which will mark the 20th anniversary of the annual Merkley Supply Limited trade show. MSL 2011 will be held on March 24, 2011 at the Hampton Inn Conference Centre.
NEW AT MSL 2011: EDUCATIONAL SEMINARS
For the first time, the MSL Show will feature educational seminars from exhibitors. These one-hour training seminars will take place in private rooms above the show floor and will let you receive product and topical education and training.
Architects and designers can earn
1 self-directed point per seminar, so be sure to sign up for at least one seminar when you register for the show!
TOPICS INCLUDE:
- LEED & Preferable Materials and Resources: by RG Integration
Selecting and specifying Environmentally Preferable Products is as equally complex as it is important in defining green buildings and reducing negative environmental impacts. While some product certifications may help, in some instances, they are too often misused or misleading. As the focus on product life cycle assessment (which differs from LifeCost Assessment) intensifies, understanding the fundamentals of this science and upcoming standards will be essential to all stakeholders.
Join RG Integration to learn more about LEED, preferable materials and resources.
- Introducing Portland-Limestone Cement & The Holcim Awards: by Holcim
A new cement class, called Portland-limestone cement (PLC), is being introduced in the Canadian market. Join Holcim to learn about Portland Cement, its environmental and sustainable construction credentials and its availability. Holcim will also outline the Holcim Awards -- an international competition of the Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction.
- Proper Masonry Detailing & Quality of Work: by Arriscraft
Understand the detailing elements required for effective moisture management in the various key areas of masonry veneer walls. Identify guidelines to follow in the design of a movement joint system to control differential movement in masonry veneer walls. Appreciate the effects of workmanship and environmental factors in the effective implementation of the design.
- Building Envelope Systems: by Henry
In this presentation we will discuss technical issues around the cause and effect of condensation created by air & vapour leakage through the building envelope. How does relative humidity and temperature differentials play a role in vapour diffusion & mould growth? What is a "Thin Wall Profileā, is this wall the right choice, how can it save money and what are vapour permeable membranes? This presentation will also examine the different air/vapour and vapour permeable air barrier membrane systems available to create proper and complete building envelope membrane systems.
- Sustainable Design in Brick Masonry : by Hanson Brick
The presentation is a review of the various rating systems for sustainable design and how masonry fits in or achieves points. It also looks at other sustainable attributes of masonry which are not covered by the rating systems.
- Sealants as a Building Weatherseal: by Sika
Understand the evolution of sealants, the types of sealants available, the best joint design, as well as common sealant and caulking problems and their solutions.
- Controlling Moisture Movement in Buildings: by W.R. Meadows
Learn how to combat building envelope moisture penetration and the problems it causes. Identify types of moisture movement and see the effects of envelope moisture below slab on grade, PLUS foundation walls and above grade wall assemblies.
- Introduction to Natural Stone Design I: by Realstone Systems
This one-hour class from Realstone Systems -- in concert with the Marble Institute of America -- is designed for Architects, landscape architects, and interior designers desiring to gain a full understanding of natural stone as a building material. Learn more about the various natural stones and obtain information about common quarrying techniques, fabrication, and finishing methods.
- Rehabilitating Unstable Veneers: by Blok-Lok
The seminar will show examples of unstable veneers, examine the dynamics of wall systems, and discuss probable causes of failure. Learn how to recognize and understand the causes of unstable veneers and explore stabilization techniques.
- Using GeoFoam and EPS Insulation in Below-Grade Applications: by Plastifab
Attend this overview of the use of expanded polystyrene (EPS) products in below-grade applications and insight into the use of GeoFoam - a lightweight fill material used for soil stabilization, foundation fills, weight reduction, stadium seating and other geotechnical applications in soft soil conditions.
- Air Sealing the Building Envelope: by DOW
When enhancing the energy efficiency of commercial & residential buildings, the entire building envelope should be considered -- including fenestration.
Attend this seminar to learn about spray Polyurethane Foams available for air sealing residential and commercial building envelopes.
- Corrosion Mitigation for Reinforcing Concrete Structures: by SIKA
Canada & Vector Corrosion Technologies
Together with Sika Canada, Vector Corrosion Technologies will provide expertise and resources to evaluate, design, install and monitor complex active corrosion protection and mitigation systems. The presentation will provide an overview of the corrosion process of steel embedded in concrete and how an active corrosion mitigation can prevent, slow down or completely stop the corrosion of the embedded steel in concrete. Particular focus will be on the use of discrete galvanic anodes for these purposes.
- Air Water & Moisture Management in Commercial Buildings: by DuPont
Review the physics of heat-air and moisture management and the role of water, air and vapor barriers in moisture-managed envelope design in this presentation by DuPont.
- Sealer and Maintenance Decisions: by Realstone Systems
This seminar will de-mystify the world of sealers by explaining what a sealer is, detailing its characteristics and exploring how it can help to maintain a number of surfaces.
- Sustainable Design with Glass Block & Glass Block Systems: by Pittsburgh Corning
Attend this seminar to learn how glass blocks are made and how glass blocks and new glass block technologies contribute to LEED points. You will also learn how glass block systems contribute to LEED innovation credits and sustainability beyond LEED, as well as how new and innovative glass block systems contribute to the health, safety and welfare of building inhabitants.
